Aash Azadi, daughter of High Archivist Maan Azadi, lives in the Archive Enclave, where she works as a teacher of ancient history at the Archive. Raised in the Church of the Higher Mind since she was a child, Aash was eager to become an Archivist like her mother. However, growing up with tales of her estranged father, an aeronaut explorer who was lost to the Cloud Ocean when she was just a baby, there is no doubt that the seed of adventure was planted deeply in Aash's heart at a young age.
Mitra Raksaka, a talented young aeronaut salvor, lives and works aboard the salvage ship, the Perihelion. He grew up in the Archive Enclave and was educated in the schools of the Archive where he met his best friend, Aash Azadi. At age 10, Mitra ran away from home for the first time and stowed away on a salvage ship, hoping to sail the Cloud Ocean. The captain found him within hours of leaving dock and returned him home immediately, but Mitra would not be deterred. Eventually, after several failed attempts, he left home for good, signed on to a ship, and never really looked back.
Not much is known about Kor, an intelligent robot of unknown origin, or its companion, a uniquely intelligent mutant rodent which it calls "Widget." Kor is even a mystery to itself, as its memory core was damaged at some point in the distant past and only recently repaired by Widget. Stories of powerful and violent robots matching Kor's description wandering the Wastes below the Cloud Ocean go back centuries among grounder historians, but that couldn't possibly be the same robot... right?
High Priestess Prayana the 49th is the head of the Church of the Higher Mind, and the most recent in a long succession of High Priestesses. Legend has it, the founder and first leader of the Church was a survivor named Prayana who co-founded Sky Island, helped forge trade alliances with grounder chiefs, and laid the foundations of how society exists today. Every High Priestess chooses her own Successor, and in honor of that first great leader, each Successor takes the name Prayana during the Ceremony of Ascension, when the current High Priestess dies and passes the reigns of leadership.
Dorian "The Wasp" Hadda, Grand Minister of Collected Things, is a high ranking bureaucrat in the government of Sky Island. Growing up in the Murk district of the city, he has positioned himself as "a man of the people," despite his exceptionally lavish personal lifestyle. Believing that there is power in understanding the past, Dorian collects rare books, which live on massive shelves in his office. He believes that it is his right as "a true son of Sky Island" to rule the Cloud Ocean, and makes moves from the shadows to ensure his rise to power.
Maan Azadi, the mother of Aash Azadi, is the High Archivist of the Archive Enclave, the primary repository of knowledge collected by the Church of the Higher Mind. She oversees the integrity of the Archive, and is the highest ranking Church official outside of Sky Island. Even though her daughter, Aash, has been publicly raised in the Church, not much is known about Aash's father, Kulapat Azadi. According to Maan, her husband was an aeronaut explorer, and was lost on the Cloud Ocean when Aash was very young.
Vastukar is the leader of the Forevergone, a faction of powerful Exiles who have banded together to study and perfect their extraordinary gifts. While his origin a mystery, Vastukar is known as a fair and compassionate teacher and spends much of his time personally leading the meditation rituals of his followers. He is considered to be one of the most powerful psionics alive, despite going to great lengths to hide the extent of his abilities.
Born in the Murk, the fog infested slums in the lower district of Sky Island, Valessik has experienced firsthand the indifference and cruelty of the ruling classes, and has devoted his life to bringing death and destruction to those responsible for the suffering of the lowest in society. A fanatically religious, albeit fringe, member of the Church of the Higher Mind, he sees his mission as a sort of holy war against a society that bleeds wealth from the people. Brutal and righteous, the dread pirate king and his Dreadnauts are a terrible force.
The Successor is the right hand of High Priestess Prayana, and second in command of the Church of the Higher Mind. Hand chosen from the most promising young Archivists of the Church, the job of the Successor is to absorb all knowledge of the inner workings for the Church first-hand, and to be ready to take over as High Priestess on the Day of Ascension. While she rarely speaker in public, it is rumored that Memana, the current Successor, has developed close friendships with many government ministers, including Grand Minister Dorian Hadda.
Jhutha Shikaaree, one of the most most powerful and cunning Grounder outpost chiefs, has rallied a devoted and fanatical tribe of brutal hunters and efficient scavengers behind him through leading by example: personally leading mutant hunting parties, facing down dangerous Exiles, and establishing beneficial trade relationships with the Sky Island government. He is bold, charismatic, and exceptionally dangerous to cross.
